This year for Christmas I got my husband a beer brewing kit for Christmas from the Brooklyn Brew Shop. After seeing it featured on Uncrate I knew it was the gift for him!
And ever since Christmas he's been looking forward to the weekend that we'd get it started. Well this was the weekend. Although the kit contains most everything you need, we still needed a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond to get another pot big enough to brew in, a large mesh strainer, and a funnel. Actually, you'd be surprised and what trouble we had finding a big enough strainer and a funnel. We ended up at Auto Zone for a 99 cent funnel after the only option at Bed Bath & Beyond was a fancy set for $9. But after the errands, we cleaned and prepped the kitchen and got started!
And it is definitely a process. From start to finish you are looking at about a 4 hour endeavor. But it was a fun way to spend an afternoon, and it was the most excited I had ever seen my husband in the kitchen! Here's Brooklyn Brew Shop's 2 minute video on How to Brew Beer. Although I do plan to write up our "How To" covering the questions and problems we had along the way in case any of you attempt to brew your own beer too!
This weekend I also attempted Olivia's Caramel Sea Salt Brownies for the second time. Let me tell you, I cannot get that recipe right. The first time I tried to follow her recipe, but ended up with a disgusting mound of oily brownie batter. Like, disgusting oily. So this time I cheated and used a boxed brownie mix and added the home made caramel sauce. FAIL. I thought I could get away with not using the heavy cream in the recipe, but after still not quite getting the right texture, I'm thinking this is a necessary ingredient. They still tasted good, but the caramel was not quite caramely. Alas, I am bound and determined to get these right! I WILL try again!
Did any of you Make or Bake something this weekend?
I think that is an awesome gift!!! I love it when husbands get excited over stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteI made some more potato soup over the weekend and some cupcakes for Michaela Byrd's bday party. Both were delish. :)
Hey Amanda! Ymmmm, cupcakes :-) I hope she had a great birthday party!
ReplyDeleteHmm, I have a brownie box mix, some caramel sauce from Starbucks, and a jar of sea salt. I may take the lazy way out.
ReplyDeleteBTW - Lisa, you should totally cheat. Because I tried AGAIN, thinking I had found a recipe for a no-cream caramel sauce, and it was a no-go. THe brownie underneath was awesome, but the gunk on top was just a layer of grainy sugar. ick!
