In honor of Earth Day, (which I know was yesterday!) I'm going to share what I do to be green (and how it saves green!)
1. Turn off the lights. I leave as few lights on, and definitely turn out the lights each time I leave the room. I also unplug when I can, the coffee maker, appliances ... all of that saves electricity, and my bill!
2. Regulate the thermostat. Right now it's turned off because my house stays pretty cool. We also have a thermostat which we can regulate by day & hour. That definitely saves electricity & my bill!
3. Save Water! First of all, I don't use water bottles. I also try and use 1 water glass a day to save dishes. I've stopped taking showers EVERY day, and now shower every other day, and skip washing the hair if I can. Saving water & my water bill! I also air dry my hair usually, saving electricity!
4. Use GREEN household cleaners! From cleaning the toilet to your laundry, unclogging a drain, keeping ants out of the house, all you need is Borax & Vinegar! Here's an AWESOME link on many uses for Borax. Considering I haven't had the need to buy laundry detergent in almost a year, I'd say the savings are considerable! I'm now going to start using the Borax for more household cleaning! It's a "green" product - and it very inexpensive!
5. RECYCLE! Okay ... I'm going to make a pledge to recycle. Yikes, it's ridiculous that I haven't been recycling, but I'm going to call tomorrow to get my own Blue Bin so I can start recycling. This won't save you any $$$ directly, but it sure doesn't cost anything to do!
6. Thrift!!! This is a way to recycle! Instead of buying BRAND NEW CLOTHES (with all the packaging included) check out the local thrift shop or Craigslist. By purchasing clothes, furniture or anything that is already made, you're playing a small part in slowing down production by being 1 less consumer. This is all around good! Most thrift stores benefit a charity, you're being green, and definitely saving money! (I need to show & tell my new summer clothes!)
7. Re-use! I re-use plastic bags for trash bags, tissue paper, gift bags & packaging supplies for my own gift wrapping & shipping off Mississippi Mud orders or care packages to my hubby. I KNEW I was smart when I saved ALL
those packing peanuts & bubble wrap from wedding presents & our move! (Even though I still have a BIG trash bag full of peanuts & 2 brown paper bags full of bubble wrap!) Check out this awesome tutorial on a bag made out of all those plastic bags. I so want to do this!
8. Sign up for online bill pay! Receive & pay your bills electronically. This saves paper & postage for you!
9. Be an economical cook! Don't make too much food and cut recipes in half so less goes to waste & eat leftovers! This will save on the amount of food waste & the amount of money you spend on groceries! I've started cutting recipes in half because I can only eat so many leftovers and HATE throwing out food!
