First thing we did that morning was to go to the island shops. I splurged per David's encouragement and bought a new dress and top. Thinking back, I remember David saying that you never know, we might go out to dinner at the Club. Maybe. And I thought he was being coy.
Our next adventure was to climb Old Baldy the lighthouse. It was a beautiful sunny day, hardly anybody around the first week in February. We climbed to the top and enjoyed overlooking the island, seeing everybody teeny tiny below.
We drove the golf carts back to the house and hung out for a little bit. I wanted to take a nap, but David insisted we go for a walk on the beach, out on East Beach to the Point.
So we hop back into the golf carts, and drive across the island. I remember David pulling off at one pier, then changing his mind as we drove a little further to a different pier.
Before we got out, I rested my head on his shoulder and said I was sleepy. "You might want to wake up for this," he responded. I only remember his saying this as I looked back for clues, considering I had no idea that today was the day my future husband would ask me to marry him.
We abandon our shoes and begin walking down the beach towards the point.
It was sunny and beautiful and we were quiet and smiley and we swung arms hand in hand, just enjoying the sun and wind on our faces, and the waves lapping in our ears.
We approach the water and test it with out toes, FREEZING! We see a little island of sand a little ways off through a shallow patch of ocean, and decide not to walk out there since the water was ice cold.
We turn back, and turn towards each other, smiley. David begins telling me sweet and loving things. I remember him saying, "You're the one I want to spend the rest of my life with." Still not putting together the importance this day would hold, for a split second I thought, "He can't say that, that's the type of thing you say when you ask someone to marry you!"
A moment later in surreal slow motion, David begins to get down on his knee and it hits me.
"Oh, my God," came from my lips as I understood what was about to happen.
"Sarah, will you marry me?"
Within a split second, the ring is on my finger, I've pulled David off his knees, and am saying, "Yes yes yes!" I could not stop smiling, taking in the moment, thinking "This is it! This really is it!" allowing myself to realize what had just happened!
I didn't want to walk back down the beach and go back to the house. I couldn't believe that EVERYONE knew! His parents were at the house, and this WHOLE TIME knew he was going to ask me to marry him! David confessed how he had called my brothers, had met with my parents . . . Walking back down the beach, I recall only seeing two people. As we walked past the second person, I couldn't hold back and told her with excited glee, "We just got engaged!"
As we reach the house and walk up the stairs to go in, we are greeted by his parents AND my parents, and glasses of champagne! I run over to my mom and say, "I'm engaged!" and show her my ring and burst into tears!
I will NEVER forget that day. The surprise of my life. I stand by what I told David moments after he asked me to marry him, "You've made me the happiest woman in the world."
Then we all went out to dinner at the Club, and I wore my new dress.
